Sports Massage Explained
Available at both clinics in Stoke on Trent, sports massage works through the application of deep tissue massage to give relaxation to your muscles that are found to be holding excessive tension. If you are holding excessive tension in your muscles then you are more liable to become injured.
Even though it sounds like sports massage would be something only for sportspeople, this is not true. In fact, it helps normal people with everyday issues. Here is a video explaining how massage can help you even if you are not sporty:

Sports Massage (also referred to as soft tissue massage) is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, ligaments and tendons.’ (Sports Massage Association)
Sports massage can be divided into 4 categories relating to the reason for its application.
General preventative sports massage – This is the application of deep tissue massage to relax any muscles that are found to be holding excessive tension. Tense muscles cause pain and you are more likely to become injured or cause injury elsewhere.
Remedial sports massage – This is the application of soft tissue massage to assist the recovery of particular injuries or your specific problem areas.
Pre-event warm up massage – This is a short and vigorous massage to get the blood flowing within your muscles, it is applied before the event starts to prepare you and maximise your performance and prevent injury.
Recuperative sports massage – This is to soothe tired and aching muscles after events or hard training to aid your recovery and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
The techniques used by massage therapists have been developed to ensure that effective and efficient results are gained from each massage that you have. The benefits of massage include:
- Improve circulation and lymphatic flow
- Assist in the removal of metabolic waste
- Sedate or stimulate nerve endings
- Increase or decrease muscle tone
- Increase or decrease muscle length
- Remodel scar tissue when required
- Assist in mental preparation for sporting participation
Sports massage is not just for sports people. The benefits above can also help relieve many day to day problems that everyone experiences.
If you play sports at any level, a sports specific massage can be beneficial at various stages of participation. For example:
- The conditioning / training phase
- Pre competition
- Inter competition
- Post competition
- Post travel
- Injury prevention
- Injury recovery
